Abstract

Despite the fact that Ukraine has been suffering from Russian aggression for the third year, Kharkiv National Medical University continues to train future dentists who meet the requirements of the modern labor market, both in Ukraine and internationally. The educational process in modern realities requires modernization, when optimal conditions are created for the professional development of future specialists. An important direction in this is 

the personal orientation of education, updating its content and form, and introducing the latest educational technologies. Purpose of the study. To determine the motivations for the expediency of introducing the selective discipline “ethics and deontology in dentistry” into the educational process for 1st-year students of the Faculty of Dentistry of KHNMU. Materials and methods. The analysis and generalization of scientific, pedagogical and methodological literature on elective disciplines offered to first-year students of the Faculty of Dentistry of KHNMU is carried out to justify the introduction of a new topic of selective discipline and the expediency of its introduction into the educational process. Research results. For the first time, in the 2024-2025 academic year, the Department of Dentistry of the educational and Scientific Institute of postgraduate education of KHNMU joined the development of a selective discipline for students of the Faculty of Dentistry. The question arose about the need for the Department of postgraduate education to pay attention to this and for the first time offer a new selective discipline “ethics and deontology in dentistry” to first-year students of the Faculty of Dentistry. The motivational moment for students of the first year of the Faculty of Somatology regarding the need to study the discipline “ethics and deontology in dentistry” is the need to master a complex of professional and general ethical issues in the relationship between a dentist and a dental patient at the present stage of society development with the definition of legal aspects of professional activity of a dentist. Conclusions. Studying the elective discipline “ethics and deontology in dentistry” will help create prerequisites for improving and deepening students ‘ knowledge and skills and contribute to the formation of professional competencies of future dentists.
